Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX was a democratic Ruler. Kesultanan Yogyakarta Government was very much different now than before. The occidental education that he went through led him to found an alternative culture and this he used to re-build Yogyakarta Palace. Any part of the traditional palace that was to him to be not good enough were demolished and he changed them with better structures. In spite of the that, he didn’t lose any substantiation that an Indonesian King (Sultan) was bestowed with. His cultural concept were far-sighted and found new acceptance and helped returned Yogyakarta Palace’s to its former glory.
After the Indonesian President's Proclamation of the Republic of Indonesia, he advised the Indonesian President and explained Yogyakarta Palace’s desire to acknowledge and assist the new Indonesian Government under Sukarno. Jakarta, the new capital of Indonesia was then going through a very critical situation, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX offered Yogyakarta to be the capital of the beleaguered country. A same offer was made when Jakarta was attacked by the enemy earlier.
